Tips For Choosing The Optimal Wireless Audio Transmitter Device For Whole-House Audio Streaming
A growing number of wireless audio transmitter devices promise the ultimate freedom in streaming music all over the house. We will look at the most widespread technologies for wireless audio and give some advice for choosing the best wireless audio product.
If your house is not wired for audio then you face quite a problem when you want to get your music from your living room to your bed room. Frequently the audio source cannot be moved. Running speaker wires between rooms will be expensive and therefore many people are looking for other options. The following technologies are utilized by devices solving this problem: infrared, RF, wireless LAN and powerline.
Infrared is restricted to line of sight because the audio signal is sent as lightwaves and for that reason devices utilizing this technology, such as infrared wireless surround sound products, are limited to a single room.
RF wireless products will send the signal as RF waves. These waves can easily go through walls. RF wireless audio devices either utilize FM transmission or digital audio transmission. The least expensive choice is FM transmission. Products using FM transmission, on the other hand, have a number of drawbacks. These include degradation of the audio quality due to static or hiss and audio distortion. In addition, FM transmitter products are also fairly prone to interference from other wireless transmitters.
Products using digital wireless audio transmission, such as Amphony audio transmitter products, utilize a digital protocol in which the audio is converted to a digital signal before transmission. This method guarantees that the audio quality is entirely maintained. Some transmitters utilize some type of audio compression, such as Bluetooth transmitters, which will degrade the audio to some extent. Transmitters which broadcast the audio data uncompressed will achieve the highest fidelity.
WLAN products are useful for broadcasting audio from a PC. However, wireless LAN was never designed for real-time audio streaming. As a result, products utilizing WLAN will introduce some amount of delay to the signal. WLAN receivers usually require buying a separate LAN card to be plugged into every receiver.
Powerline products use the power mains as a medium to broadcast the audio. These products normally provide excellent range. On the other hand, they face trouble if there are a number of separate mains circuits in the home. In this case the signal will have problems crossing between these circuits. Powerline products have another challenge in the form of power surges and spikes which can cause transmission errors. To avoid audio dropouts, these products will commonly have an audio latency of several seconds as a safeguard.
Here are some recommendations for choosing the perfect wireless audio system: Try to find a system that can run several wireless receivers from a single transmitter. Ideally an unlimited number of receivers should be supported. That way you don't need to purchase additional transmitters when you start adding receivers in different rooms of your house. Products with some sort of error correction will be more resistant against radio interference from other wireless transmitters. Digital RF audio transmitters will be able to maintain the original audio quality. If you have time-critical applications where sync of the audio is crucial then you should get a transmitter with a low audio latency. An audio latency of less than 10 ms would be appropriate for most scenarios.
Select a transmitter that has all of the audio inputs you need, e.g. speaker inputs, RCA inputs etc. Make sure that you can purchase additional receivers later on as you expand your system. Check that you can get receivers with speaker outputs for connecting regular loudspeakers as well as receivers with line-level RCA outputs. If you go with a digital audio transmitter, pick one with an input audio level control knob to avoid the music signal from clipping inside the transmitter audio converter. This will ensure optimum dynamic range regardless of the signal level of your equipment.
For high amplifier power efficiency and best sound quality, verify that the amplified receiver has a built-in low-distortion digital amplifier. Verify that the amplified receiver is able to drive speakers with the preferred Ohm rating and that it is small and easily mountable for easy set up. 5.8 GHz wireless devices usually have less trouble with interference from other wireless transmitters than products working at 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz.
