The older series 1 Tivo's could be used like a VCR for manual programs. The earlier series 2 TiVo's were the same way but no longer.
If you buy a TiVo today - either a series 2 or a HD series 3 you have to subscribe or it won't work.

You can still find Tivo's with a lifetime subscription on eBay. The lifetime is not transferable so if the TiVo breaks you have to get it repaired.
