Some say, had President Gerald Ford (born Leslie Lynch King, Jr.) severed a whole term he would be remembered as a great president.

Upon their deaths, all presidents receive accolades that fall just short of cannonization. I'm not saying that President Ford does not deserve praise...but to your question, I think that Bush knows that upon his death - he too will be praised. Sad really.
