Three Kitchen Pieces Every Cook Should Own

Every avid home chef has a dream list of equipment they covet more than anything in the world. For everyone this list may vary, but there are some constants across all lists. Those who cook want to be better at what they do. While in most cases the equipment does not make the chef, having good equipment can make the job of the chef easier.

One of the most useful and coveted pieces of kitchen arsenal is the Kitchen Aid Artisan stand mixer. This is the quintessential mixer that is recognizable everywhere. There are at least 20 colors available and numerous attachments, making it suitable for every cook. It is beautiful and durable and can be passed down to your children and their children.

The artisan mixer makes everything in the kitchen a little bit easier. There is enough power to make bread dough and make creaming butter child's play. There are enough attachments to conquer any challenge that faces you in the kitchen. The sausage maker, meat grinder, ice cream maker, and pasta machine are just a few of the attachments to play with.

A quality roasting pan should also be in every kitchen. This is a versatile piece of equipment that can be used on more occasions than just Thanksgiving day turkey. It is large enough to do big batch cooking or a large roast.

Purchase the highest quality roasting pan you can afford. The pan should be heavy bottomed so it holds and conducts heat well. The handles should be large enough and positioned in such a way that grabbing them with oven mitts is easy. The edges should be high enough to contain a large piece of meat or poultry safely as well as the juices it exudes.

If you are one of those chefs that has practically everything for cooking, you might consider getting a Cameron Cookware stainless steel stovetop smoker. These can be seen on Iron Chef America fairly often, and having one at home can take your cuisine to the next level.

Everyone loves a delicious smoky flavor to their food, but traditionally the process is a long and labor intensive one. With a stovetop smoker, the deep, rich flavor of smoke can be imparted into your food in just minutes. If you are on a diet, this is a great thing to have. Smoke adds tons of flavor without adding extra fat or salt.

If you are looking to expand your kitchen, or just want life to be a little simpler, all of these are great additions to the home.

Got Carrier IQ? At least three apps can tell the answer (Albuquerque Journal)

The world still seems to be sorting out whether Carrier IQ helps improve your
smartphone experience or is some sort of privacy antichrist, but in the
meantime there's an increasing number of tools to determine whether it's on
your phone.

The venerable Lookout Labs--makers of a popular Android antivirus--most
recently released a free app to detect if the allegedly malicious keylogging,
activity-, and location-tracking process is running on your Android
smartphone.

The Lookout app is a very simple Carrier IQ detector: download and install and
it does a quick scan to tell you if CIQ is present, but it can't actually
remove it from your system. Given Lookout's strong reputation as a security
developer for Android, hopefully this free app will be more reliable than
another such CIQ detector we saw released this week, which said its "results
are not reliable yet."

Trevor Eckhart, the guy you've probably read about by now who first raised the
alarm about Carrier IQ and was ... [Read more]
