Is AOL Radio Going To Cause The Extinction Of FM Radio?
Online radio such as AOL Radio, Slacker, Pandora and Last.fm have gained attractiveness recently. Moreover, many wireless devices including cell phones support these platforms. I will take a look at the effect of online radio on traditional radio broadcasters to find out if this means the end of local radio stations.
Local radio would seem to be having a hard time in today's radio landscape with competing satellite and online radio providers taking away listeners by supplying commercial-free music and entertainment. In particular, online radio has turn out to be quite popular by offering a nearly unlimited number of radio stations.
Pandora along with other online radio providers have become accessible on wireless audio transmitter and portable devices by installing the suitable app. This raises convenience and mobility of online radio. Mobility has up to now been the main benefit of local radio.
AOL Radio provides in excess of 200 music channels and even 150 national CBS radio stations since it utilizes CBS radio as its platform. The underlying platform “play.it” also has a feature that allows listeners to create their own radio stations by entering favored albums, artists and so on. The individual tracks of each music channel are also available for storage on an iPod via 3rd-party software such as iGetMusic.
Users can also create customized radio on other online music services by entering the artist and album names and these services will play songs based on that information. Up to now, however, competing music services have fallen short to offer similarly fully customized radio channels.
Is the extinction of local radio close? The rise of competition from satellite and online radio has started to take away listeners from local radio stations. Traditional radio seems to have a difficult time to stop this trend. Online radio is especially useful for niche broadcasters who have been unable to broadcast due to the high price tag and licensing of frequency space.
The big number of accessible stations is a big benefit for online radio listeners. Still, this is a problem for online broadcasters. This big number of stations is diluting the number of listeners. Therefore streaming radio broadcasters have found it difficult to be profitable. On the other hand, online radio has less pressure to insert commercials which has made the content more appealing to listeners.
On the other hand, local radio has one big benefit over satellite and online radio. That is local content such as local news and events. Moreover, local radio is now improving the audio quality by using digital broadcast technologies versus traditional FM broadcasts which has been a big advantage of online radio thus far. Content and mobility will be essential in determining the destiny of online and local radio. Online radio provides a huge number of choices while local radio excels by providing local content. Both online and local broadcasts offer great mobility. For that reason it is hard to predict a clear winner in this radio battle.
GENERAL MUSIC INDUSTRY: Soundexchange's Biggest Competitor Just Got Audited. and They're Clean... (All About Jazz)
So who do you trust with your royalties, anyway? This is a fight that goes way
beyond Sirius and SoundExchange, and a major sticking point throughout will be
transparency. Which is why Sirius' backend royalty processor just underwent a
rigorous auditing process, one designed to further convince labels to switch
teams for satellite radio royalty administration...
