AV Receiver Reviews; The Onkyo TX-SR308
If you are planning on hunting for your first AV receiver, and would rather not dip into the 401(k) until you find out what you truly want, the Onkyo TX-SR308 Receiver might be a practical purchase for you. If you already enjoy an outdated Onkyo receiver and would like to sample several of the latest products without selling off the kids, this receiver might be precisely what you’re shopping for.
If you require a top quality av receiver with all the fun stuff, and you’re willing to tolerate the price, then Onkyo will probably currently have a receiver for you, although this is not it.
When Onkyo planned the TS-SR308, they were looking for a very dependable entry-level receiver that might be reasonable and contain just enough features to play with, though not enough to make the device cost-prohibitive. Not surprisingly, Onkyo got the initial part just right. The connectivity is going to be the claim to fame for this model; 3 HDMI inputs which include full 3D capability, and Onkyo's model will decode practically anything.
The included Universal port makes it possible for you to hook up peripherals with only one cable, and it also has a front-panel audio input which permits you to connect iPods. The Onkyo TX-SR308 Receiver furthermore strengthens Onkyo’s reputation for music quality, since it easily manages high-definition lossless audio codecs from Dolby and DTS.
We shouldn't, however, downplay the fact that this model is an entry level receiver. The alternate listening modes exhibit little improvements compared to versions from several years ago. That remote wasn't replaced lately, either, which is good as well as bad. The simplicity of the remote makes it very accessible, nevertheless it is not universal, thus you’ll need to have other remotes for your additional components unless they are additionally Onkyo products. This unit won't provide video upscaling, which is just as well. Many receivers at this price level which deliver that technology would be about the same without it, taking into account that the picture improvements are minimal however the extra cost is not.
Even though several of those faults will be enough to motivate a passionate technophile up a wall, for the rest of us they basically function to explain the $250 consumer cost. The Onkyo TX-SR308 Receiver offers quality sound and also good connectivity. Enjoying the 3D capacity at this price is furthermore pretty cool, and the faults are easy enough to live with, in particular for a neophyte who will never notice the difference.
I need to set up TV remotes to do multiple jobs?
I am trying to set various TV remotes to control a satellite box, but none of them have the code in their guide book. The satellite box is a DirecTV Satellite D10 box, and here are the remotes that I need to program this for:
-Sony TV Remote
-Sony AV Receiver Remote
-Sony DVD/VCR Combo Remote
-Oversized Universal Remote, purchased @ Staples (brand unknown)
If you know any codes that have worked please say them! Thanks!

New in the Maker Shed: Minty Mote and Wireless Sensor Node / Receiver (MAKE Magazine)
New in the Maker Shed are two new, low cost, wireless products from the good
folks at Wicked Device. The MintyMote is an Arduino remote control that fits
in an Altoids Smalls gum tin (not included.) The Wireless Sensor Node /
Receiver Shield Bundle includes everything you need to create a simple, low
cost sensor network with a range of about 150ft (but has tested farther.)
