Getting the Right Presentation Projector
If you need to purchase a power point projector for an upcoming presentation or deadline, time is of the essence and with all the technical jargon and options, this task can really seem overwhelming. Thus, this short guide was written with you in mind, to fill you in on just the projector basics. With all the buzz words and projector jargon out there, your knowing the basics will be a great help to you in your projector search.
When an image is projected, it is made up of a quantity of dots of light called pixels. Your video source (usually your computer) determines the initial resolution, if you are soon updating your computer you may want to get a projector that can handle the more modern higher resolutions natively.
VGA resolution (640x480) used to be the most common over 10 years ago, this was soon replaced by SVGA (800x600) now you are most likely to find XGA projectors with a (1,024 x 768) resolution. For graphic presentations however, sometimes a inexpensive used SVGA projector will meet your needs. One can even venture into the really high end resolutions such as SXGA and UXGA, (1,280 x 1,024) and (1600 x 1200) respectively. This ultra high-end resolution comes with a high price tag. While projectors can often accommodate more than one resolution, they usually have one resolution that they are most comfortable with, this is the projector's native resolution or default resolution.
For on the go projector presentations, brightness (measured in lumens) is one of the most important projector parameters to consider. Because of the significant influence of the screening environment, ambient light and projector brightness on the visual appeal of your projector presentations, lumens (units for light intensity) are an important spec to look at when choosing a projector. For larger sized audiences in a semi-darkened room, you will probably have to go with Ansi lumens measurements of 5,200 lumens. With a much smaller screening room that can get completely dark, you could make a clear, crisp presentation with a projector that puts out only 1,000 lumens. You often see lumens expressed as Ansi lumens in projector literature, ANSI is just a uniform standard of measuring lumens, by having a standard you can be sure you are comparing "apples to apples" as the saying goes.
"Throw distance" is another term of interest, it refers to the distance you can have the projector from the screen with a focused picture. If your projector needs to be far from the screen, it will usually be equipped with a large throw lens. For power point projector presentations, short throw projectors can be advantageous because you can place them at the front of the room near the screen (behind the presenter) and make your presentation without any obtrusive shadows on the screen or distracting projector lamps glaring at you.
Connectivity is very important when interfacing your computer to a projector. Making sure that you have compatibility is important to someone who does power point projector presentations. You should obtain your computers native resolution and write this down, note if it’s SVGA or XGA, also you’ll need to know the connection standard by which you can connect computer and projector, many projectors have a computer in port and with the common standards in place, this isn’t much of a worry. In any case, still check to make sure you have the proper ports and cables at your disposal to connect your devices. Again, when everything is compatible, that's one less thing to worry about.
When you look at a variety of projectors with your needs in mind, you can make an informed decision. For instance, eBay can be a great source for deals on both new and refurbished projectors. Armed with the basic knowledge, you are ready to go and find a great deal on the perfect power point projector for your needs.
