FLOOR COVERINGS – SOME FAMILY FRIENDLY OPTIONS

When kids and pets come into the equation when choosing floor coverings – things take on a whole new complexion.  As we all know, kids have a different view on the world and for them, a floor covering can be anything from a football field to a battleground, a magical sea or a forest floor, a wrestling pen or a blank canvas (literally!) .  Their imaginations have no limit.  That’s why ensuring that the floor covering in a family home can stand up to the tough ‘imagination’ test of the children is a priority when shopping for new ones.

Making the wrong choice can be expensive as well as inconvenient and time-consuming.  It’s really worth doing some homework before rushing into a decision – you’ll be pleased you did.  Here are some family friendly flooring tips:

Put safety first

Safety is paramount, so choosing a floor covering that provides a stable platform is very important.  A slip-resistant covering that cushions a fall and that is also shock-absorbent  is a good choice.  Carpets provide a really good non-slip covering, but alternatives include bamboo flooring, wooden flooring, natural coverings such as jute, sisal and hemp, carpet tiles, vinyl floors and rubber flooring.  Look for something that provides a softer landing – especially when it comes to energetic kids and budding super heroes!.  Tiles are probably not the best option as they are very hard and can be slippery.

And if your children use the floor to slide and ride on – then vinyl, laminate or carpet tiles are a good option.  If these floors are damaged in any way, they can be replaced section by section – making them a cost-effective option.

When health matters

If your children are prone to allergies – try and avoid carpets with a thick pile where dust and other allergens can accumulate and avoid coverings that give off lots of fluff or lint.  The surface shouldn’t allow for growth of any mould, fungus or bacteria.

Choosing colours

A dark coloured carpet can be an effective block for muddy paws, stains and spills and other unidentifiable ‘kid’ marks – but aren’t good when it comes to hiding dust, light-coloured pet hair, crumbs and other debris.  Earthy tones – browns, beiges and sandy colours – are best.  They are also a practical decorating choice as you can easily combine them with a colourful rug or playmat.   .

Carpets with a pattern, texture or ones with a varying tone also provide a practical option for hiding life’s day to day spills and thrills.

A soft or hard landing?

Plush carpets are good for grown-ups, not for growing families! .  No matter how tempted you are by the luxurious feel of a plush carpet, they will only cause anguish down the line.  Luxury may have to take second-place to practicality while the family is growing up.

Nylon is the best choice for carpets in high-traffic areas, as it is stain-resistant, durable, hardwearing, colour-fast and maintains its good looks even under tough conditions. Go for a tight-weave carpet to prevent snagging and pulling.

Protecting your assets

For an added layer of protection, put down a teflon coated carpet or have it Scotchguarded.

Cleanability

Always check with the supplier as to the maintenance requirements and cleanability of your intended floor covering.  A floor coverings Perth supplier suggests weekly vacuuming to remove dust and debris, with a deep steam clean once a year to prevent allergens building up, remove deep-seated stains and to extend the life and looks of your investment.  It’s also worth asking your supplier to only show you carpets that have an “extra heavy duty’ rating as these will provide the very best defence against vigorous family use!.

Well, considering that they are at different price points, there is no way of knowing which one is the "better buy". It depends what you need, a laptop or desktop, and then if you need a more powerful graphics processor or not.
