A Brief History Of Opeth
Opeth was at the beginning something very different than it is today. The origins of Opeth lie in a death metal band started in Stockholm in 1990 by singer David Isberg which played Swedish style death metal similar in style to contemporaries like Entombed. Before long the band began to add some decidedly non-metal sounds into its music, taking inspiration from folk and other style and using acoustic guitars heavily. The band was to change radically soon with the arrival (unannounced to the rest of the band, who quit in protest) of Mikael Akerfeldt, formerly bassist with the band Eruption. Akerfeldt was to remain the sole constant in the group from then on and he and Isberg recruited new members and continued on, taking the name Opeth from Wilbur Smith's novel Sunbird.
The band kept moving further away from their earlier death metal sound, largely eschewing blastbeats and adding clean vocals along with death metals' characteristic growls. They soon began to develop their own progressive take on death and black metal, which can be seen even on their first release, Orchid, which came out in 1995. This release was followed a year later with Morningrise. The first two albums generated some buzz for the group and they started attracting fans with their unique sound.
However, their third album My Arms Your Hearse made the band well known internationally. With elements of folk, doom metal and black metal and a hint of their beginnings as a death metal outfit, the album was well received by fans and critics alike and its release was accompanied by Opeth merchandise which was quickly snapped up by their growing legions of fans. Critics praised the album, often comparing it to non-metal but similarly dark artists like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. While they were beginning to earn some well deserved fame, they would not tour worldwide in support of an album until the 2001 release of Blackwater Park.
Over the years, Opeth has seen a lot of members come and go while always keeping to a vision all their own, which is a tribute to the leadership of Mikael Akerfeldt. Starting with the groups first performance, personnel changes have been common; guitarist Andreas Dimo left immediately after, quickly followed by Nick Doring, the bass player. The two were replaced by Johan DeFarFalla (who has joined and left the group twice in their career) and Kim Petterson. Neither were to stay ling and were soon replaced by Peter Lindgren. In 1992, three years before Opeth even released their first album, founder David Isberg departed for the group Liars In Wait. Akerfeldt has been there every step of the way, his songs, his guitar and voice are the heart and soul of Opeth to fans and his lyrics are just what metal fans love; from traditional metal fare like death, depression and gloom to personal topics, Opeth fans can relate.
The band soldiered on as a threesome, working on the melodic sound with heavy use of acoustic instruments for which they would become known.
Martin Mendez joined as bassist and Martin Lopez took over the drummer's stool for My Arms Your Hearse, forming the powerful rhythm section behind their third album and garnering critical acclaim for the group. Finally, Opeth was coming to be seen as the band to be reckoned with in the world of progressive metal.
In 2000, Opeth finally visited the US while supporting their album Still Life, where fans were thrilled to see the band play in the country. Their next two albums, Blackwater Park and Deliverance expanded their fan base even more – and many fans were simply puzzled by the 2003 release Damnation. With an all-acoustic set featuring some traditional songs, it was something a little different, even for a band which has made a career of being different.
The follow-up Ghost Reverie was a return to progressive metal for the group, who released Watershed in 2008, also continuing in the classic Opeth sound. Their second live album, Roundhouse Tapes came out in 2007; Opeth has made two live albums, nine studio albums, two DVDs and two box sets in their career, as well as Opeth merch of all sorts.
Mikael Akerfeldt has steered the group through personnel changes and ever growing success. His is the face most prominently featured in Opeth merchandise pics and fans and critics alike are always interested in seeing what the next move is for Akerfeldt and Opeth.
Who would win the epic final battle? The forces of power metal or the legion of black metal?
There was a metal armageddon and somehow it came down to the armies of power metal and black metal. Will the forces of power metal triumph (knights, wizards, orcs, etc.) or will the forces of black metal (witches, druids, demons, etc.) prove too strong?
BQ: What side would you join? What power metal/black metal bands would you want to perform the background music for this epic battle?

The Signature Finds Its Center: After a Ground Zero Location Fell Through, Signature Theatre Landed on 42nd Street (thepoliticker.observer)
Rendering of Signature Center entrance on West 42nd Street by Daniel Black.
(Signature Center)
Jim Houghton’s secret lair is in the back of a parking garage on 42nd Street,
just east of 10th Avenue. There, in a warmly lit room behind an anonymous
steel door, the Signature Theatre Company’s founder exhibits his models. His
artful miniatures depict a thriving theater center, featuring four stages, a
café, a bookstore and, most important, hundreds of tiny metal theatergoers. In
Mr. Houghton’s models, there is not an empty seat in the house. Across 42nd
Street, those models have nearly been brought to life. The 70,000-square-foot
Signature Theatre Center opens on Jan. 31, a bid for citywide prominence from
a company that has spent two decades making a name for itself as a friend of
the living playwright. In the mid ’90s the Signature was homeless, surviving
in space rented from the Public Theater. Now its staff is preparing to occupy
what they call the first new theater complex Manhattan has seen since the
opening of Lincoln Center. If Mr. Houghton can fill his Frank Gehry-designed
palace as easily as he has his models, this center could become the ...
